چکیده

With the trend towards miniaturization, micromachining becomes more and more important in fabricating micro parts. Investigations have shown that unpredictable tool life and premature tool failure present a serious concern in micromachining. To further develop the process, a systematic study of various types of tool geometry has been carried out. The tool failure modes and the ways in which tool life can be improved were also studied. Experimental results show that the tool tip rigidity of the semi circle-based (D-type) end-mills is much higher than that of the two-flute (commercial type) end-mills, and the machining quality with the D-type tools is better than that of the triangle-based ( -type) end-mills. The tool breakage of end-milling operations simulated using real tool geometry is in good agreement with experimental data. Both the experimental study and FEM analysis have shown that the D-type end-mills are more suitable for micromachining. (Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version)

Tool wear studies in fabrication of microchannels in ultrasonic micromachining.

Form accuracy of a machined component is one of the performance indicators of a machining process. Ultrasonic micromachining is one such process in which the form accuracy of the micromachined component significantly depends upon the form stability of tool. Unlike macromachining, a very small amount of tool wear in micromachining could lead to considerable changes in the form accuracy of the ma...

Modeling of heat generations for different tool profiles in friction stir welding: study of tool geometry and contact conditions

In this work, improved heat generation models are developed for straight and tapered shoulder geometries with different tool pin profiles in friction stir welding. The models are developed considering the welding process as a combination of the pure sliding and the pure sticking conditions. From the results, the amount of heat generation is directly proportional to the number of edges in the pi...

Mechanical Micromachining-Effect of Crystallographic Anisotropy on Machining Forces

With increased application of mechanical micromachining for creating small features with complex geometries on a broad range of materials, the need for understanding the mechanics of machining at the micro-scale has been recognized. During mechanical micromachining of metals, the tool-workpiece interaction occurs entirely within either a single crystal or a few crystals of the workpiece materia...
